[Comrade Answers Week 1]

July 16th, 2007

Here is the question selected for this week. If I get more questions I’m more than willing to answer multiple a week, and feel free to give me questions that will take hours to explain. Here we go:

What do the various cryptic messages and quotes mean that are around comradesmack.com and the blag?

Thanks Kevin Schott from Miramar, Florida.

Let’s Demystify.

Comrade Smack Splash Page

scientia potentia est = “Knowledge is Power”
non omnis moriar = “Not all of me dies”
deus ex machina = “Gods out of a machine”
nullam sperare = “Abandon Hope”
infinitum = “Infinity”
DSSK = “Digitally Soliciting Selective Knowledge” a group I’m affiliated with.
Oderint Dum Metuant = “Hate so long as you fear”

Comrade Smack Blag

I have planted seeds
and when my separate flowers bloom
they will end your world

That’s a haiku by Coyote that I’m a huge fan of.
The greater army put to flight in disorder,
Scarcely further will it be pursued:
Army reassembled and the legion reduced,
Then it will be chased out completely from the Net.

That’s a modified Nostradamus prophecy. Take from it what you will.

“attack at dawn” in the Ceasar Cipher. That’s ROT3 and is one of the first examples, if not the first, of cryptography ever used. This to me is a strong example of our roots in ingenuity. This, to me, represents the foundation of technological freedom.

That’s “all your base are belong to us” in Lojban. Lojban is a language that is bound to be the basis for the future of linguistics. As Computer Science gets more and more popular we will have less need for cryptic programming languages. Lojban is a linguistic language based on logic and can entirely be parsed by a computer. Lojban is the future in Communication between Human and Machine. The phrase in Lojban is a quintessential mark for the Geek Culture and internet memes.
Send in the Cloner!

The Elk Cloner was the first virus that spread outside of a lab environment. It was written by Rich Skrenta. Every 50th booting the virus would display a poem, “Send in the Cloner!” was the last line of the poem. This, of course, holds its ground for being malware that wasn’t destructive. An important step for a 15 year old to accomplish.
BLAERGH

This is a word that isn’t easy to find on my site, but it’s there. This, of course, was my answer to an online trivia game of “what’s your favorite color?” Winning it would have ensured that, in this game, I’d have been ridiculously wealthy, but I chose to be funny instead. Of course, i could have typed ‘red’. Later it was decided that BLAERGH is a shade of off-white/maroon.
Security Through Absurdity

This is another one of my Taglines that isn’t easy to see on my site, but it’s there. That concludes this week’s ASK COMRADE answering session. These will be answered every Monday, so get your questions in! I am okay with Personal Questions, Technical Questions, General Questions, and anything else you can think of.
