[Highschool for the Self Motivated]

Highschool for the Self Motivated

I’ve been thinking about what I’d do if I were to change my past. Currently I’m thinking about high school and how I’d have done it differently. Not much of a shock to anyone who knows me well, but it boils down to not going. This is a multi-step plan.

I. Live Somewhere Better

I live in Wisconsin which has stupid laws. One of which is that you can’t get your GED/HSED until you’re 18 and a half or your class graduates. This is problematic to anyone who wants to actually get ahead of their classmates. High school is not designed for the self motivated, nor the intelligent. High school is designed so that you can get an education and have your hand held while doing so.

II. Go to High School

To get your HSED as opposed to your GED, there are a few classes you need to take to make the process easier. This is what I’d do in high school. Take those classes.

III. Get your GED/HSED

This isn’t really all that crucial. I know many people who dropped out of high school and just went to college sans-diploma. For the sake of completion and since it’ll please the piss out of your family members, I’m including it. Once you’ve completed II, you drop out. Then get your HSED as soon as you can, but in the mean time you start researching and learning all the things you actually want to learn instead of all the stupid crap that high school gets in the way with. It helps to join communities in the subject matter you are interested in going to college for. Best part is that the GED is actually ridiculously easy to get.

IV. Enroll in college classes

If you live in Texas you will have gotten it at the good ol’ age of 16. I’m pretty sure that most colleges would accept you if you explained to them your grand scheme and why you dropped out of high school and got your GED. If not, wait until you are 18. That’s two years of fun and self-teaching.

V. Test Out of Classes.

If you’ve done precisely as I’ve said, then you could probably test out of a ton of classes you’d otherwise have to pay for. Hell, at this rate you probably don’t even need to go to college, but it’s still a damn good idea; there are things in college you can learn that you otherwise wouldn’t. Like how expensive it is and how much help some people actually need.

The problem with today’s culture is that we nurse children constantly. It’s fantastic for those who need it, but for those who don’t it’s a huge pain in the ass. If more people did this, GEDs probably wouldn’t have the poor light that they do now. Remember: it’s not that you couldn’t have finished high school, it’s that you had better things to do. All things said, though, very few individuals of high school age are actually self motivated and mature enough to follow through with this plan
