The Dangers of Automated Weaponry

Everyone in any field involving technology, as well as almost every other field of study, knows that, well, shit happens. The problem with this is that when you’re dealing with money, you can lose a lot of it on accident. You can totally fudge a database. You can shut down a server. When you’re dealing with things that kill people, people can die who you didn’t plan on.

At the South African National Defense Force, an automated anti-aircraft gun suffered from Murphy’s Law and nine people died.

It’s easy enough to tell them that they need to be more careful, but I have serious doubt that the issue was negligence. Seriously, no matter how careful you are being, shit happens.

Hopefully no tragedy befalls anyone else at the hand of automated weaponry, but when you’re in the business of dealing death, I have a little less sympathy when you die at the hand of your own murder machinery.

it was negligence. they were clearing a jam, and instead of shutting the weapon down before clearing the jam, they tried to do it while leaving it on.
